Alas- the Mother of all holidays is upon us! Not to be over-the-top, but to be as gut-wrenchingly honest as I possibly can- hear me when I say, “mothering is sacred & holy work.” I am weeping as I type this. I can only express myself as a toddler mom who has spent 20 months out of the last four years of my life growing human beings, birthing them and then living sleep-deprived for the first year of both of my son’s lives. I am still nursing and changing my youngest son’s diapers. I have this awesome responsibility of introducing little humans to my God. I am referee, nurse, housekeeper, teacher (specializing in ABCs & 1,2, 3s), chef, personal driver, search & rescue (for lost toys), birthday planner and expert in all family &special events, stain removal expert, assistant coach when it comes to their athleticism and the list goes on. I am often tired, living off of coffee and muttered prayers and feeling like I need more adult interaction. All of these seemingly mundane tasks are significant to the Lord. What could be more important than raising the next generation- shaping their values- showing them love? Mamas I salute you.
So yes, your mother, child’s mother, spouse whether she is a step-mother or birth mother deserves all the accolades and showers of appreciation this Mother’s Day. If you’re a mom reading this- feel free to forward this article to whomever you think should be taking notes on your behalf! LOL!
So if your mom insists that she doesn’t want anything for Mother’s Day don’t buy that! I’ve rounded up 5 ways to show the mother in your life some serious appreciation Sunday, May 13th! Here we go!
- Do Mother’s Day Brunch Right! Last week the kids and I made a stop at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad on our way to San Diego where we were blown away by the beauty of 50 acres of ranunculus in every color of the rainbow! Like many flower fields and botanical gardens they will be hosting Mother’s Day brunch. Why not skip the average chain restaurant and take mom out in nature on her day? I have rounded up a few botanical gardens that will be hosting Mother’s Day Brunch this year- hurry and make your reservations now before they sell out! If you’re up for the drive make it a road trip and head to the FlowerFields, or you can try out the brunch at The Huntington or Descanso Gardens
2. Type and Frame a tribute to Mom. Recall your favorite childhood memories, tough lessons she taught you and the ways she loved and supported you best. My husband and I tributed our moms on Mother’s Day a few years ago. There were tears of joy so have some tissue on hand if you’re going to try this out! This is great for the mother of adult children and grandchildren who has given decades of her life, time and resources to the wellbeing of her offspring. For detailed instructions on how to write a tribute go to How to Write a Tribute To Your Parents.
- Give her some much needed alone time, relaxation and peace. I know this is mostly every mother’s wish- but this is an especially meaningful gift to the mom of infants and toddlers because the little humans rely on mom for everything which can be physically draining. My friend Tyann has this awesome tradition. Every Mother’s Day Eve her husband checks her into the hotel of her choice where she can rest, relax and recharge alone. Then she meets her family at church on Mother’s Day and they finish up at brunch after?! Perfection right? Other ways to get the job done is to take the kids somewhere for the day to let her rest or send her to the spa or better yet get her a spa membership for a year!
4. Make her a photo book! Did you surprise her or bring her to tears of joy and catch it on camera? Go through your phone and select the most meaningful pictures of mom and make a Mother’s Day photo book to memorialize the good times.
5. Make her breakfast in bed and spell out, “MOM,” with pancakes.
Don’t panic! This is super easy and will really impress her. Use my recipe and pancake tutorial here Stacked With Love.
And this should go without saying- but if she’s like my mom and knows exactly what she wants- then do that! She deserves it! I leave you with these wise words as we go forward in the next week with our best efforts to honor the amazing women in our lives, ” She is clothed with strength and dignity, she can laugh at the days to come…Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things but you surpass them all.'”- Proverbs 31:25-29.
Such great mothers day ideas. Thank you and happy mother’s day 🙂
Wow! So beautifully said. Every bit if it touched my heart so dearly. I’m reading on through and then when I reached the flowers in Carlsbad I definitely lost it! ❤ My heart so so full. I grew up in Carlsbad through out every summer. The only times I truly had joy and peace with my mother. Good times 😍 thank you for sharing. GOD bless friend.
Such an awesome article. So warm and inspiring like having chicken soup on a cold day. I appreciate you so much Portia!
