A Cozy Family Retreat in the Heart of Colorado

A Cozy Family Retreat in the Heart of Colorado post thumbnail image

Nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Colorado lies a hidden gem that is one of the best places to travel for a cozy family retreat. Our family was invited to vacation at the longest-running 5 Star Resort in the world!! Can you guess what state this family trip brought us to?

Colorado!

The city has the prettiest Fall I have seen to date and I can’t wait to share our whole trip with you! One of the most iconic things that make The Broadmoor a perfect fall vacation idea is the amount of activities there are try. Let’s start there!

The Broadmoor just gets how to pair outdoor adventure with refined luxury for a cozy family retreat, making it one of the best places to travel in the Fall. As a family of 5, traveling with kids can be hard, but the memories prove it’s well worth it!

We want to teach our kids the importance of adventures by doing it with them, so we went on 3 kid-friendly adventures we want to share for your next Colorado trip:

1. Falconry

Embracing the outdoors is like a deep breath for the soul, and when you add the joy of sharing a cozy family retreat amidst the beauty of the mountains, it becomes truly magical.

The Broadmoor staff drove us to the mountainside, where we were met by some majestic birds; yes, you read that right! We decided to learn about the art of falconry and interact with trained birds, like owls, falcons, and hawks, and ended with the opportunity to hold one of the birds! Brielle was the brave one in our family, and you can see her experience in my stories here. As part of our beginner’s lesson we also got to partake in a free-flight demonstration, where the birds flew in and around your group.

After the adrenaline rush of such a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we continued our adventure up Old Stage Road into the forested canyon for the Wild West experience!

2. Wild West Experience

Since we were staying in cottages, we thought it was only fitting to put our lumberjack skills to the test with an axe-throwing competition. We were driven up about 8,000 feet into the mountain, to reach our friendly family competition, and began with an archery lesson.

I'll share who the big winner of our competition was a little later!

We found ourselves in the hidden South Cheyenne Creek, surrounded by Ponderosa pine and Douglas, where we practiced our archery skills before we headed to the 3-D range with targets of critters and varmints.

We exchanged your bow and arrow for tomahawks, and it was now time for some family fun! Axe-throwing is not usually the first idea for a family activity, but The Broadmoor had a safe and controlled environment where they taught us the proper technique for tomahawk throwing. It was time for the competition to begin, and I have to say it was a close call, but our big winner was *Blake*. T

here is nothing better than watching your kids immerse themselves in new adventures, which made this one of the best fall vacations for our family.

3. The Perfect Couple's Escape

If you know me, you know every family trip needs a memorable couple’s escape for us parents. Here is reason 999 to visit the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, nanny-services! We took this fantastic opportunity to explore the beautiful Seven Falls. If you didn’t know, I am terrified of heights, so when I heard we had to hike up 242 stairs to the Seven Falls, you could imagine the look on my face…

Fun Fact:

Seven Falls is named after seven small falls that make a large waterfall in Colorado Springs!

The waterfall is not the only view that will captivate you; it’s peak fall foliage right now, so you’ll see gorgeous fall colors and roaming deer, making this a city with the prettiest Fall. Although it has a fantastic view that you can get through an elevator, we accepted the challenge to hike upstairs up to the falls! Watch my full recap on my reel. And once we achieved our 181-foot climb, we headed to dinner 1858, which I covered a little later.

While guests at the Broadmoor can be shuttled to the falls complimentary, it is also open to the public. The best way to fully experience this cozy family retreat at Colorado’s most majestic waterfall is to get tickets online in advance.

Time For A Cozy Cottage!

After a day full of adventure, it was time to head back to our room, and you have to see it for yourself. Ready to find out if our cottage passed the test of comfortably hosting a family of 5?

We were relieved when we opened the door and saw how spacious and cozy our stay would be while visiting Colorado Springs.

The Broadmoor Cottages offer some of the largest guest rooms at the resort, with 450-square-foot bedrooms and 150-square-foot bathrooms that feature heated floors, one of my favorite features, especially in the mornings!

Each night, we cozied by the fireplace in our room. Another perk is the huge outdoor patio with spectacular views of the East Golf Course and Cheyenne Mountain. With us settling into one of best places to travel in Fall, we just had to figure out where to eat. Let’s go over three delicious food experiences you have to try on your next Colorado vacation!

Where to eat in Colorado Springs:

Restaurant 1858

I mentioned earlier that once you reach the top of Seven Falls, there is Restaurant 1858, which is a whole experience. The restaurant has a gold rush history influence, with dishes taking inspiration from the traditional heritage of early frontier cooking to create a seasonal menu ranging from rainbow trout to wild boar green chili.

Lake Terrace

Sunday’s are for brunch, and The Broadmoor delivers!

The Lake Terrace dining room had TWELVE chef-attended stations ranging from prime rib to a raw bar. I could not believe their eye-catching and delicious set-up until I saw their dessert table; you can see for yourself here! The beautiful pianist playing in the back makes this one of the best fall vacation idea for a cozy family retreat.

Play

This next restaurant is something the kids are still talking about! We spent the night at Play, The Broadmoor’s onsite bowling alley and restaurant.

Full of games like football tables, pool tables, and a full bowling alley, this is the perfect fall vacation idea for your next family trip. The best part is that there are even toys, like legos, for the kids to enjoy while we had family dinner. You can watch our full experience at Play here.

With a variety of experiences ranging from shooting bows and arrows in the Colorado Springs Mountainside to hiking to a glorious waterfall, 5-star dining, and being nestled away in a family cottage on the East Golf Course with views of the Cheyenne Mountains, this trip was the fall refresh we needed as a family. If you want a fall vacation idea, I recommend The Broadmoor for a cozy family vacation.

And with Fall in full effect, I want to share my Fall Breakfast Board with you!
